  • At its current solar maximum, our Sun has been pretty busy of late, flinging parts of itself at Earth and raising concerns about effects on satellites and power grids while also gracing us with incredible aurorae.

The National Academies' Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics, released in 2023, outlines key priorities and recommendations for the next decade in solar and space physics research. It emphasizes the need for a balanced approach between understanding fundamental processes in the solar system and addressing practical issues like space weather impacts on Earth. The survey calls for increased funding and support for missions that explore the Sun-Earth system, heliophysics, and the broader space environment. It highlights the importance of developing new technologies for space weather prediction, enhancing international collaborations, and fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the field. Additionally, the report suggests the establishment of a new program to study the Sun's influence on Earth's climate and proposes several flagship missions, including a mission to study the Sun's corona and solar wind, and another to investigate the magnetospheres of other planets.
