The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has been advised to leverage its strengths in research and innovation to attract talent for its newly proposed medical school, despite its lack of experience in medical education. According to Professor John Leong Chi-yan, a member of the government's steering committee on medical school development, HKUST should focus on its established reputation in science and technology to draw in both students and faculty. This approach is seen as a way to differentiate HKUST from the existing medical schools at the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The new medical school aims to address the city's healthcare worker shortage by potentially training up to 150 doctors annually. However, the proposal has sparked debate over the allocation of resources and the potential impact on the quality of medical education in Hong Kong.
