Sigma Designs Extends Intel WiDi Technology for Peer-to-Peer Streaming Over Wi-Fi to Multi-Function Media Players

Sigma Designs Showcases Intel® WiDi as an Application on Set Top Box Reference Platform at CES 2012

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - Jan 12, 2012) - CES 2012 -- Sigma Designs, the leader in connected media platforms, today announced that it is adding Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) technology to its set top box (STB) reference designs, enabling consumer electronics partners to deliver a wider range of viewable content, by streaming content from notebooks wirelessly to a HDTV via a STB.

Intel introduced its WiDi technology exclusively with Sigma Designs' System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions in 2009. Since then, the two companies have partnered to successfully launch three generations of products for single-function TV adapters to enable consumers to share their notebook screen on their HDTV. This is the first time Sigma Designs and Intel are offering a reference platform where Intel WiDi can be added to a multi-functional Over-The-Top (OTT) STB. This design will be provided directly by Sigma Designs.

"Intel has continued to innovate their offerings for both consumers and OEMs by now enabling their WiDi technology to push a notebook experience directly to a HDTV on a Sigma-powered set top box," said Thinh Tran, CEO and Chairman, of Sigma Designs. "Sigma Designs secure media processors offer a wide range of codec support in addition to a broad range of OTT applications, making it the ideal choice for OEMs."

"Sigma Designs has been a strong partner since the inception of the Intel WiDi program. Their media processors continue to be one of our leading platforms of choice for delivering innovations based on Intel WiDi to consumers and OEMs," said Adam King, director of notebook product marketing at Intel Corporation.

As peer-to-peer wireless connections become an industry standard under the Wi-Fi Alliance wireless display standardization efforts, both companies will continue to collaborate to further enhance the wireless display market and deliver products that enable seamless content-sharing."
