NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - March 29, 2011) - The graphics chip market is attempting to recover from a disappointing second half of 2010. Estimates from Jon Peddie Research argued that overall shipments of graphics devices for the year 2010 came in below expectations with 4.3 percent total year to year growth. There is optimism that the market could be ready to turn a corner this year as PC sales pick up and exciting new products enter the market. Intel was the leader in unit shipments last year. However, on a quarter-to-quarter basis AMD and NVIDIA gained market share at Intel's expense. Intel expected to gain additional market share with its chip that combines a traditional core processor with a graphics processor, "Sandy Bridge." However Intel halted shipment of a companion chipset that worked with Sandy Bridge, the "Cougar Point" after it found a design flaw.
Leslie Sobon, AMD vice president of product and platform marketing, said the company has received hardware requests as a direct result of Intel's issues.

A recent war of words broke out between industry peers NVIDIA and AMD. Currently NVIDIA claims that its latest graphics card, the GTX 590, is the 'world's fastest graphics card.' AMD is not at all happy with the claim and has challenged NVIDIA to prove it.
Dave Erskine, senior PR manager for desktop graphics at AMD, claims that the AMD Radeon HD 6990 sits on the top as the world's fastest graphics card. On a blog post on AMD's website Erskine goes as far as to list several review sites linking to benchmarks that do favor the Radeon HD 6990 4GB over NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 590 3GB.
