Aruba Networks, Inc.: Washington and Lee University Networks iPhones, PDAs, and Laptops With Aruba Networks' 802.11n Wi-Fi Solu

"Apple iPhones and other clients brought on campus by students presented a challenge to our old network, but are fully supported by Aruba. We will be managing these devices using Aruba's policy enforcement firewall together with Bradford's endpoint compliance system. These systems force students to keep security and operating system patches up-to-date or be quarantined from the network until they do so. 802.1X is used to authenticate all guests -- something we couldn't do previously -- and guest access is so easy to administer that non-technical personnel will be able to register visitors and contractors."
The university is deploying a mixture of 802.11n and 802.11a/b/g access points, with a twist. The 802.11a/b/g access points can be upgraded at any time to 802.11n Draft 2.0 operation over the network by entering a license key. Available only from Aruba, this feature enables customers to lower the cost of the initial deployment and migrate to 802.11n on a schedule and budget that works best for them. The access points are managed by Aruba 3600 Multi-Service Mobility Controllers.

"Because there can be significant throughput differences of the same mobile device operating over different wireless LANs, we validate the interoperability of our solutions across a variety of devices and Wi-Fi chip sets. We also recommend that competitive tests use a representative assortment of clients with Atheros, Broadcom, and Intel chip sets because doing so best mimics a real-world environment."
