  • I began graduate study in 1975, the midpoint of the first 100 years of quantum mechanics, 50 years ago and 50 years after the discovery of quantum mechanics in 1925 that we celebrate here. So I'll seize this chance to look back at where quantum physics stood 50 years ago, how far we've come since then, and what we can anticipate in the years ahead.

The article from Sohu discusses the ongoing debate about the origins of the COVID-19 virus, focusing on the theory that it might have leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. It mentions that the U.S. Department of Energy has indicated a low confidence in the lab leak hypothesis, while other U.S. agencies hold varying opinions, with some still favoring a natural zoonotic spillover. The piece also touches on the political dimensions of the debate, noting how the topic has become contentious between the U.S. and China, with implications for international relations and scientific collaboration. Furthermore, it highlights the lack of conclusive evidence for either theory, the calls for more transparency from China, and the global scientific community's frustration over the politicization of the issue. The article underscores the importance of understanding the virus's origins to prevent future pandemics and improve global health security.
