Google has quietly deleted its pledge not to use AI for weapons or surveillance, a promise that had been in place since 2018.
Google has updated its policy on artificial intelligence (AI) to explicitly prohibit the use of its AI technologies in weapons and surveillance applications that could cause harm. This policy update, detailed in a blog post by Google's Vice President of Trust and Safety Laurie Richardson, aims to clarify and expand upon Google's existing AI Principles established in 2018. The new guidelines specifically address the use of AI in military and intelligence applications, stating that Google will not support technologies that are likely to cause "overall harm" or are used in weapons or surveillance violating international norms. This move comes after previous controversies, including Google's Project Maven, which involved AI for military drone targeting, leading to significant internal and public backlash. The policy now includes a more rigorous review process for potential AI uses, ensuring alignment with Google's ethical standards.
