  • The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced Tuesday that the "Doomsday Clock" is now set to 89 seconds to midnight.

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic measure of how close humanity is to self-destruction, has been moved to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. This adjustment reflects heightened global risks, primarily due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine which has escalated nuclear threats, disrupted global norms, and increased the likelihood of nuclear weapon use. Additionally, the ongoing climate crisis, with 2022 being one of the hottest years on record, and the breakdown of global efforts to address climate change, contribute to this dire outlook. The Bulletin also highlighted the weakening of international institutions, the spread of disinformation, and the potential for biological threats as factors pushing humanity closer to catastrophe. The decision to move the clock was made by the Bulletin's Science and Security Board, which includes 10 Nobel laureates, emphasizing the urgent need for global cooperation to mitigate these existential threats.
