The breakthrough allows light to travel long distances—up to 1 millimetre—on a single chip, showing promise for compact and efficient quantum devices.

Indian scientists from the Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bengaluru have developed a groundbreaking technology that allows for the control of light at the nanoscale. This innovation involves the use of a unique nanostructure known as a "nanogap," which can manipulate light down to scales much smaller than the wavelength of light itself. This technology has potential applications in various fields including quantum computing, where it could enhance the control over quantum bits (qubits), and in advanced sensing technologies. The research, published in the journal *Physical Review Applied*, highlights the use of a gold nanoparticle and a gold film separated by a nanometer-sized gap, which can confine light to extremely small volumes, thereby enabling precise control over light-matter interactions. This development could lead to significant advancements in optical communication, data storage, and even in the development of new types of sensors and detectors.
