- ChatGPT impressed millions of internet users when it was first launched in December 2022. To Filipino Elmer Peramo, though, it felt familiar. After typing in some prompts and seeing the artificial intelligence chatbot's responses,
The Philippines is developing its own AI chatbot, named "FilGPT," designed to understand and communicate in Filipino and Taglish, a blend of Filipino and English commonly spoken in the country. This initiative, led by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in collaboration with the University of the Philippines, aims to make AI technology more accessible and culturally relevant to Filipinos. FilGPT will not only converse in local languages but also incorporate Filipino humor and cultural nuances, potentially making it more relatable than existing AI models like ChatGPT. The project is still in its early stages, with plans to integrate it into various sectors including education, customer service, and government services to enhance communication and service delivery.
