Time Moves Faster On Moon Than On Earth? Scientists Reveal
- To explore the Earth's natural satellite, the communication and navigation infrastructure between both worlds must be synced immaculately.
Scientists have revealed that time moves slightly faster on the Moon compared to Earth due to differences in gravitational forces. This phenomenon, known as gravitational time dilation, was highlighted in a study by the European Space Agency (ESA) and presented at the 50th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. The Moon's weaker gravitational field means that clocks run faster there; for instance, a clock on the Moon would gain about 56 microseconds over 24 hours compared to one on Earth. This minute difference has significant implications for future lunar missions, particularly for synchronizing time between Earth and the Moon, which is crucial for navigation, communication, and scientific experiments. The study underscores the need for precise timekeeping in space exploration, especially as humanity plans for long-term lunar habitation and missions to Mars.
