  • Finland's Henna Virkkunen and Malta's Glenn Micallef take up key commissioner roles following June's EU elections

The European Parliament has confirmed the appointments of Iliana Ivanova as the Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, and Thierry Breton as the Commissioner for Internal Market, following a series of hearings. Ivanova, previously a Bulgarian MEP, took over the culture portfolio from Mariya Gabriel, who resigned to become Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Ivanova's responsibilities now include managing the Creative Europe program, which supports the cultural and creative sectors. Meanwhile, Thierry Breton, who has been in his role since 2019, continues to oversee digital policy, including the implementation of the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act, aimed at regulating tech giants and enhancing digital rights. Both commissioners received strong support from MEPs, with Ivanova's appointment seen as a positive step for the cultural sector, and Breton's reappointment reflecting confidence in his handling of digital and market issues.
