  • Authorities say the vaccine has already been passed by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNSCT), pending NDA approval

Uganda has achieved a significant milestone in veterinary science with the development of an anti-tick vaccine, as reported by the National Agricultural Research Organization (Naro). This breakthrough aims to combat the devastating effects of ticks on livestock, which include diseases like East Coast fever, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers. The vaccine, which has shown promising results in trials, targets the tick's gut, causing it to bleed internally and die, thus preventing the spread of tick-borne diseases. This development not only promises to reduce the reliance on acaricides, which are often expensive and environmentally harmful, but also offers a sustainable solution to enhance livestock health and productivity in Uganda. The vaccine's progress is part of a broader initiative to improve agricultural practices and support the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
