CMS & Wave Announce First-Ever Opal External SED
Wave Software Selected to Manage CMS's External Self-Encrypting Drives
IRVINE, CA and LEE, MA--(Marketwire - Feb 13, 2012) - CMS Products, Inc. and Wave Systems Corp. (
"As businesses look to external drives for additional storage, it's important for data to be secured," said Ken Burke, President, CMS Products, Inc. "External SEDs are often used to store sensitive information, creating an even stronger need for industry-standard encryption. By encrypting the drive itself, customers can protect their data from intruders."
The Opal standard was created by the [ Trusted Computing Group ], a consortium of more than 100 companies that collectively develop, define and promote vendor-neutral security standards. The standard is designed to ensure interoperability across vendors, technologies and platforms. While traditional SEDs based on Opal have shipped for several years, this is the first time an external drive has ever earned the distinction.
As enterprises move mission-critical data between appliances, they must also consider legal and compliance regulations in their respective industries. Many organizations transferring data are required by law to be in compliance with data protection standards both internally (on a computer) and externally (on an external hard drive). CMS's new external SED helps ensure that companies meet regulations like HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley and more.
"The increasing use of mobile technology, external drives and cloud-based solutions has turned the spotlight on data security -- making it a significant priority for CIOs and IT professionals," says Eric Kohl, Senior Director, Ingram Micro Advanced Technology Division. "The introduction of the CMS CE Secure DiskVault Wave Edition can address many of the security concerns businesses and consumers share. We're pleased to play such an integral role in the launch of this innovative technology."
Brian Berger, Wave's Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales, commented, "We are honored to work with CMS in offering their customers an external SED that is secure from start to finish. Wave activates the drive's lifecycle functions, from initialization, to authentication, to drive de-commissioning so users feel confident that their sensitive information is secure."
