ANNAPOLIS, MD--(Marketwire - February 25, 2011) - TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: [ TSYS ]), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, announced that the reexamination of U.S. patent "Inter-Carrier Messaging Service Providing Phone Number Only Experience" number 6,985,748 ('748) has been dismissed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. TCS patent '748 was previously the subject of a successful patent litigation where a jury unanimously found the '748 patent valid and willfully infringed. The litigation resulted in a $23 million settlement in January 2011. All litigated claims remain valid and enforceable.

TCS patent '748 describes a system, method, and apparatus that allow a wireless subscriber to send a digital packet to a user on a different wireless carrier by addressing the packet with only a phone number. A database associates a different carrier and routing syntax to the phone number to which the packet is addressed. The digital packet is then routed to the recipient carrier. The digital packet also can be a short text message.

"As a leader of innovation in wireless communications technology, TCS sets protection of our intellectual property as a high priority," said Mark Ramberg, director of intellectual asset management for TCS. "We are pleased that the reexamination of patent '748 has reached a successful conclusion and that the validity of our patent claims has been affirmed."

As of February 23rd, 2011, TCS holds 144 patents worldwide with more than 300 applications pending. To learn more about TCS patents, please visit: [ http://www.telecomsys.com/about/ip-licensing/patents.aspx ].
