OAKLAND, Calif.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Zhone Technologies, Inc. ] (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, announced today that Tussa IKT AS (Tussa), a local power utility and triple-play services provider in Norway, has selected the industry-leading MXKa" multi-service access node (MSAN) system to serve as a core enabler of its fiber network upgrade.

"Although our triple-play subscribers expect us to deliver the most advanced services available with todaya™s technologies, they have even higher expectations for the quality of the experience"

Tussa first deployed Zhonea™s flagship [ MXK ] intelligent Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) solution at the end of 2009 to bolster its voice, video and high-speed data offering in the Sunnm're region and has since recognized the benefits of advanced connectivity, improved network quality and service consistency a" all of which have become critical definers of customer satisfaction in todaya™s competitive triple-play environment.

aAlthough our triple-play subscribers expect us to deliver the most advanced services available with todaya™s technologies, they have even higher expectations for the quality of the experience,a explained Ivar Driveklepp, managing director, Tussa IKT AS. aThat is why we are working closely with Zhone to ensure that our networks can accommodate the unprecedented bandwidth demands of services such as high-definition television and high speed Internet access. We want to provide the industrya™s best service experience to our subscribers by minimizing delay and jitter in our network and have achieved that goal with the MXK platform.a

However, MXKa™s reputation for being the highest performance access solution for fiber networks is just one reason for Tussaa™s upgrade. The utility will also benefit from the platforma™s ease of operation, and MXKa™s extended reach feature will allow Tussa to reduce the number of deployment sites compared to traditional, legacy GPON systems, reducing both capital and operating expenditures.

Further savings will be recognized as a result of MXKa™s streamlined network upkeep, output management and customer provisioning requirements a" which minimize the resources needed for support, maintenance and technical personnel training. The MXKa™s GPON solution also enables a drastic reduction of power consumption compared to traditional Active Ethernet fiber access solutions, which aligns very well with the green power and renewable energy profile of Tussa.

aAs wea™ve experienced not only in the Nordics, but in many global regions, the local service provider responsible for delivering triple-play services may not fit the traditional operator definition. In the case of Tussa, we are collaborating with a customer whose primary business has historically been power transmission and distribution,a said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. aAnd while there are many similarities in the network and service delivery challenges faced in both energy and telecom a" such as bandwidth strains caused by increased demand a" we recognize that telecoma™s much more rapid pace of service innovation requires a unique scalable solution that provides both flexibility and longevity.a

Zhonea™s MXK platform is a fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP platform and the industrya™s first terabit access concentrator. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers. In addition, MXKa™s ability to support for Active Ethernet and GPON on the same system enables Tussa to configure its networks with maximum flexibility and efficiency.

Zhonea™s future-proof MXK platform also offers Tussa multi-access points at highly efficient capacities and costs and enables the utility to seamlessly and cost-effectively integrate additional broadband technologies such as 10G GPON as consumer demand dictate in the future and technologies evolve to support higher bandwidth.
