HERNDON, VA--(Marketwire - November 24, 2009) - [ RCN Metro Optical Networks ], a division of [ RCN Corporation ] (NASDAQ: [ RCNI ]) and a premier provider of fiber optic-based network solutions, announced today that it has been recognized in IDG InfoWorld's 100 Awards. Each year, the InfoWorld 100 Awards recognize the top 100 most innovative uses of IT initiatives to further business goals.

"This year's recipients of InfoWorld's highest honor are shining examples of IT projects undertaken by tech leaders committed to pushing their organizations forward," said Jason Snyder, Features Editor, InfoWorld.

RCN Metro's Order Management System (OMS) is a system that has been built from the ground up in a little over a year to track the installation of sales and internal projects. RCN Metro's OMS has the ability to track an order from the point of sale to order acknowledgement through the installation completion and billing process. During the development process, feedback from all of the teams that use this system was solicited in order to ensure that the system was optimized to meet their needs, to improve communication, and to increase overall efficiency. Of utmost concern was ensuring that this new system enhanced the customer experience. The 100 percent web-based system uses .NET 3.0 frameworks with .NET programming language, JavaScript and additional third party objects. The backend of OMS leverages an Oracle 11g database that utilizes multiple functionalities, procedures and triggers -- all of which were built for this unique application.

"We're honored to be recognized in this year's InfoWorld 100 Awards for our new order management system," said Felipe Alvarez, President, RCN Metro. "Our previous order management system had reached its limits. With our new OMS, we're able to automate work flow processes and shave days out of our service delivery process, allowing us to improve the quality and speed of service delivery. The open source structure has delivered a dynamic system capable of evolving alongside our business. This flexibility has not only saved time and streamlined business processes, it has helped us make more intelligent business decisions and better track internal performance, thereby improving our responsiveness to our clients."
