Qatar Celebrates 17 Years of the Stars of Science Gala
Locale: QATAR

Qatar’s “Stars of Science” Marks 17 Years of Innovation, Honouring Regional Trailblazers
Qatar’s rapidly evolving research ecosystem has entered a new era of celebration. The “Stars of Science” event, an annual gala that crowns the country’s most promising scientists and innovators, has just celebrated its 17th season. The ceremony—held at the state‑of‑the‑art Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and broadcasted across the region—highlighted the sustained momentum of Qatar’s scientific ambitions and underscored the country’s commitment to positioning itself as a knowledge‑based economy.
A 17‑Year Journey
The inaugural Stars of Science event was launched in 2007, and since then it has become Qatar’s flagship recognition of scientific excellence. Over the years, the programme has grown from a modest, internally‑oriented award into a multi‑disciplinary showcase that includes researchers from the natural sciences, engineering, health, social sciences, and humanities. The 17th edition brought together more than 200 nominees across 12 award categories, ranging from “Innovation in Technology” to “Social Impact Research.”
Organiser‑in‑Chief Dr. Khalid Al‑Humaidan, director of the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), remarked that the gala “celebrates not just individual brilliance but the collaborative spirit that is essential for solving the region’s most pressing challenges.” He added that the long‑standing partnership between QNRF, QSTP, and the Qatar Foundation has cultivated a thriving environment where ideas can be nurtured from concept to commercialisation.
Award Highlights
Innovation in Technology – 2024 Edition
The top honour went to Dr. Farid Al‑Jaber for his breakthrough in bio‑printed organs. The 32‑year‑old researcher’s prototype, which uses patient‑specific stem cells, has already attracted interest from international biotech firms. Dr. Al‑Jaber’s award underscores Qatar’s commitment to becoming a global leader in regenerative medicine.
Social Impact Research – Dr. Sara Al‑Khatib, a sociologist from Qatar University, was recognised for her work on digital inclusion in rural communities. Her study, which maps the digital divide across the Gulf and proposes policy interventions, is already informing the Ministry of Communications’ upcoming broadband strategy.
Entrepreneurship – A startup, Q-Med, founded by three QSTP graduates, received the Entrepreneurship Award for developing a low‑cost, AI‑driven diagnostic tool for early detection of diabetic retinopathy. The tool is now in pilot testing across several regional clinics.
In addition to the main categories, several honorary awards were presented. Dr. Aisha Al‑Nasiri was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for her decades of research into renewable energy solutions, while the “Youth Innovator” prize went to a 19‑year‑old student from Doha’s international schools, who has designed a novel solar‑cell architecture.
Themes and Take‑Aways
Regional Collaboration – A recurring theme of this year’s gala was the importance of cross‑border collaboration. A panel discussion on “Regional Science Hubs” highlighted joint research projects between Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, and how shared infrastructure is accelerating discovery. The event also celebrated the newly formed Gulf Scientific Consortium, a partnership aimed at standardising research ethics and data sharing protocols across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
Science Diplomacy – The Stars of Science gala was broadcast across the GCC, and a number of international delegates attended in person, signalling the growing role of science diplomacy in Qatar’s foreign policy. Dr. Omar Al‑Shamsi, QSTP’s Director of International Relations, explained that “Qatar’s science platform not only attracts talent but also facilitates diplomatic dialogue through shared research goals.”
Innovation Ecosystem – The event showcased the integrated ecosystem that supports Qatar’s scientific ambitions. From the QNRF’s generous funding programmes to QSTP’s incubation facilities, and the academic programmes at Qatar University, the ecosystem is designed to move discoveries from the lab to the market. The gala included a live demo of the QSTP’s “Innovation Sprint” – a 48‑hour hackathon that turns academic prototypes into MVPs (minimum viable products).
Looking Ahead
The 17th season of Stars of Science served as a springboard for the upcoming “Qatar Science & Innovation Decade” initiative, announced during the ceremony. The initiative will focus on five strategic pillars: (1) Clean Energy & Sustainability, (2) Advanced Healthcare & Biomedicine, (3) Digital Economy & Cybersecurity, (4) Social Sciences & Humanities, and (5) STEM Education & Outreach. The vision is to double Qatar’s scientific output by 2030 and to position the country as a regional hub for advanced research and innovation.
In a closing speech, President Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al‑Thani expressed gratitude to the community of scientists and innovators for their dedication. “It is their curiosity, resilience, and ingenuity that propel us forward,” he said. “We will continue to invest in the next generation of talent, ensuring that Qatar remains at the forefront of global scientific progress.”

The Stars of Science gala has once again demonstrated the power of scientific excellence to shape policy, industry, and society. As Qatar moves forward into the next decade, the momentum generated by 17 seasons of celebrated innovation sets a compelling precedent for the Gulf region and beyond.
