Missouri State expands Jordan Valley Innovation Center capacity with new suites

Missouri State University has announced a significant expansion of its Jordan Valley Innovation Center, a move that will double the center’s capacity and provide new high‑tech suites designed to attract startups, researchers, and corporate partners. The project, completed in mid‑October, adds 15,000 square feet of state‑of‑the‑art lab space and collaborative work areas, positioning the center as a key catalyst for economic growth in the region.
New Suites and Facilities
The newly added suites are modular, flexible workstations that can be configured for a range of industries, from biotechnology to advanced manufacturing. Each suite is equipped with high‑speed internet, advanced HVAC systems for sensitive equipment, and shared resource hubs such as 3‑D printing labs, precision machining, and bio‑reliability testing stations. In addition to the core lab space, the expansion includes a dedicated conference center with 200‑seat capacity and a series of breakout rooms intended for workshops, hackathons, and pitch events.
“We’ve designed these suites with the future in mind,” said Dr. Emily Torres, director of the Jordan Valley Innovation Center. “Our goal is to provide entrepreneurs with the flexibility they need to experiment, iterate, and scale their ideas, while giving our academic researchers a modern environment to collaborate with industry.”
Impact on the Local Economy
According to the center’s economic development report, the expansion is expected to generate an estimated 150 new high‑tech jobs within the first two years of operation. The additional suites will also enable existing companies within the center to expand their research and development operations, leading to greater product pipelines and stronger ties with Missouri State’s academic faculty.
“Jordan Valley has been a cornerstone of our county’s innovation ecosystem,” said Mayor Michael Carter of the city of Springfield. “By expanding the Innovation Center, we’re providing a tangible resource for entrepreneurs and giving our local workforce the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a knowledge‑based economy.”
Partnerships and Funding
The expansion was funded through a combination of university capital investments, a $2.3 million grant from the Missouri Economic Development Office, and a matching contribution from the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps program. The grant also included a strategic partnership with the Missouri State Department of Commerce, ensuring that the center’s output aligns with statewide economic priorities such as clean energy, precision agriculture, and digital manufacturing.
In addition to funding, the center’s leadership announced a new collaboration with the Missouri State College of Engineering and the nearby Kansas City Metropolitan Area Innovation Hub. The partnership will facilitate joint research projects, student internship pipelines, and co‑branding opportunities for startups emerging from the center.
Entrepreneurial Success Stories
Since its launch in 2021, the Jordan Valley Innovation Center has already produced several notable success stories. Bio‑tech startup CellVantage, a spin‑off from the university’s Department of Biology, secured $1.8 million in Series A funding after developing a rapid‑diagnostic test for emerging pathogens. Meanwhile, MakerMinds, a robotics company, received a $500,000 grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for its prototype adaptive exoskeleton.
“We’re proud to see our tenants succeed,” said Dr. Torres. “Their achievements are a testament to the supportive environment we’ve cultivated here and the synergy between academic research and entrepreneurial ambition.”
Future Vision
Looking ahead, the expansion team is already planning the next phase of development. A proposed “Tech Innovation Pavilion” would create a mixed‑use space for retail, dining, and community events, fostering greater public engagement with the center’s activities. Additionally, the university intends to launch a quarterly “Innovation Forum” featuring keynote speakers from industry, academia, and policy circles to discuss emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, circular economy, and quantum computing.
The Jordan Valley Innovation Center’s expansion marks a milestone in Missouri State University’s broader strategy to become a regional leader in research commercialization. With its new suites, enhanced facilities, and strengthened partnerships, the center is poised to accelerate the transition of ideas from the lab to the marketplace, benefiting students, entrepreneurs, and the wider community alike.
