The National Academy of Sciences has elected 120 new members for the year 2025, recognizing their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Among the new members are notable figures such as Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó, known for her pioneering work on mRNA technology that led to the development of COVID-19 vaccines, and Jennifer Doudna, co-inventor of the CRISPR gene-editing technology. The new class also includes 30 international members from 19 countries, reflecting the global nature of scientific research. The election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in American science, and these new members join a prestigious group that advises the federal government on scientific and technical matters.
