Two Oklahomans join ranks of luminaries elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences

  • Playwright and attorney Mary Kathryn Nagle and multidisciplinary visual artist Anita Fields are among the 250 new members of the 245-year-old society.

Mary Kathryn Nagle, an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a playwright, along with Anita Fields, a renowned artist from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, have been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This prestigious recognition highlights their significant contributions to the arts and sciences. Nagle, who serves as legal counsel to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, has been celebrated for her impactful plays that address Native American issues, while Fields is acclaimed for her work in pottery and textiles, which often incorporates traditional Muscogee motifs. Their induction into the Academy not only honors their individual achievements but also underscores the importance of Indigenous perspectives in the broader cultural and academic landscape.
