  • For a long time, it seemed like the stuff of science fiction. But with companies like Neuralink pioneering brain chips, and volunteers allowing the companies to plant the experimental technologies directly into their bodies,

A groundbreaking study has introduced a new retinal chip that has successfully restored vision in legally blind individuals, with some participants regaining the ability to read as they did before their sight loss. This innovative technology, known as the PRIMA implant, was developed by the French company Pixium Vision and involves a subretinal implant that stimulates the remaining functional cells in the retina. The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, involved patients with severe vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The chip converts images captured by a camera into electrical signals, which are then transmitted to the retina, bypassing damaged photoreceptors. Participants in the trial reported significant improvements in their visual acuity, with some able to recognize faces, read large print, and navigate independently, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of blindness.
