Mote Marine Laboratory unveils new technology that can fight Red Tide
- On Wednesday morning, Mote Marine Laboratory announced that three promising red tide mitigation technologies have completed rigorous laboratory testing and received regulatory approvals to begin the field deployment research stage.
Mote Marine Laboratory has introduced an innovative technology aimed at combating red tide, a harmful algal bloom that affects Florida's coastal waters. This new system, known as the "Red Tide Terminator," uses a combination of clay flocculation and filtration to remove the toxic algae, Karenia brevis, from the water. The process involves dispersing a mixture of clay and water into the affected areas, which binds with the algae, causing it to sink to the bottom where it can be filtered out. This technology not only aims to reduce the concentration of red tide but also minimizes the release of toxins into the air, which can cause respiratory issues. The initiative is part of a broader effort to protect marine life, human health, and the local economy, which suffers from the negative impacts of red tide events.
