President Marcos assured the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Wednesday of funding to complete construction of the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) in Capas, Tarlac.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the Philippines is seeking additional funding to complete the construction of the Philippine Genome Center's (PGC) Virus Research Center (VRC). The project, which began in 2019, has been stalled due to insufficient funds, with only 30% of the construction completed. The VRC aims to enhance the country's capabilities in virus research, including the development of vaccines and diagnostics, and to prepare for future pandemics. The center is designed to be a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) facility, crucial for handling dangerous pathogens. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the urgency of finishing the center, especially in light of ongoing global health threats, and has appealed to the Department of Budget and Management for the necessary financial support to resume and complete the construction.
