President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan bill into law on January 1, 2024, aimed at cracking down on fentanyl trafficking. The legislation, known as the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, imposes sanctions on transnational criminal organizations involved in the production and trafficking of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid responsible for numerous overdose deaths in the U.S. The bill targets the financial networks of these groups, enhances law enforcement capabilities, and declares international fentanyl trafficking a national emergency. It also includes measures to strengthen border security and interdiction efforts to prevent the influx of fentanyl into the country.
