  • Burst water pipe blots out the Sun - or at least the data about it collected from two probes Servers that store data collected by two NASA solar observation satellites are down - and the space agency doesn't know when they'll resume operations - after a four-inch chilled water pipe burst at the facility that houses them.

The NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) datacenter, responsible for processing and storing data from the SDO which observes the Sun, has been flooded due to heavy rainfall in Greenbelt, Maryland. This incident has led to the datacenter being offline until at least 2025, as the facility requires extensive repairs and restoration. The flooding has affected the availability of real-time solar data, although NASA has backup systems in place to ensure continuity of some data collection. The SDO, launched in 2010, provides critical information about solar activities, which is essential for space weather forecasting and understanding solar phenomena. The downtime could impact research and operational activities that rely on continuous solar data.
