Inside the 'swat team' -- how insects react to virtual reality gaming

  • Humans get a real buzz from the virtual world of gaming and augmented reality but now scientists have trialled the use of these new-age technologies on small animals, to test the reactions of tiny hoverflies and even crabs.

The article from ScienceDaily discusses a study published in the journal Nature Communications, which explores the potential of using a common cold virus, specifically a modified strain of the Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), as a treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Researchers found that this virus can selectively infect and kill cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. The study demonstrated that the virus not only directly attacks the tumor but also stimulates an immune response that could help prevent cancer recurrence. In preclinical trials with mice, the treatment significantly extended survival rates, and when combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors, the results were even more promising. This approach represents a novel oncolytic virotherapy, where viruses are engineered to target and destroy cancer cells, potentially offering a new avenue for treating this deadly disease.
