• During the [ JavaOne 2012 ] strategy keynote, Hasan Rizvi, executive vice president, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Java, and the Oracle Java Development team leaders outlined plans for the future of the Java platform and highlighted the latest Java technology innovations.
• Phil Rogers, AMD Corporate Fellow and HSA Foundation President, joined Oracle on stage to discuss [ Project Sumatra ], which was recently approved in the OpenJDK Community. Project Sumatra will explore how Java can be extended to support heterogeneous computing models for improved performance and power consumption.

  • A developer preview of [ JavaFX Scene Builder 1.1 ] is available for immediate [ download ], adding support for Linux.
  • Oracle plans to propose Project Nashorn, a new JavaScript engine for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), later this year in the [ OpenJDK Community ]. Oracle expects to enhance Project Nashorn with the support of several other OpenJDK Community contributors, including IBM, Red Hat and Twitter.
  • Plans for Java SE 8 are moving forward and Oracle announced a revised roadmap for the release, with availability expected in late 2013.
  • Completion of the HotSpot/JRockit JVM convergence project is targeted for JDK 8, including performance enhancements and a second-generation Java Flight Recorder.
  • The OpenJDK Community continues to host the development of the reference implementation of Java SE 8. Weekly developer preview builds of JDK 8 continue to be available from [ jdk8.java.net ].
  • JavaFX 8 will be released as part of Oracle's Java Development Kit (JDK) 8 implementation and will be the default UI toolkit for Java SE 8 Embedded, providing a consistent programming environment for embedded system applications and desktop applications alike.

  • Java ME 8 Java Specification Requests (JSRs) are being prepared for submission to the Java Community Process (JCP).

  • Java EE continues to be hugely popular with increasing developer adoption and over 50 million downloads of Java EE components, including [ Oracle GlassFish Server ], and 14 Java EE 6 compliant application server implementations currently available from IT vendors.
  • Java EE 7, the next generation of Java EE, is well underway with 4 new and 10 updated JSRs being worked on through the JCP.
  • Java EE 7 is targeted for release in the second quarter of 2013 and is planned to include new features that will help facilitate building scalable HTML5 applications, including support for non-blocking (event-driven) I/O Servlet 3.1 API, JCache, JSON-P, WebSockets, JAX-RS 2.0 Client API, JPA schema generation and an improved security configuration, which can particularly benefit applications deployed to cloud environments.
