Cavium Showcases Industry-Leading Mobile Infrastructure and Device Solutions Ranging From Small Cell Base Stations to Evolved Packet Core and Wireless Display for Smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2012

Live Demonstrations of LTE Small Cell Base Station Using Cavium's OCTEON® Fusion, LTE Evolved Packet Core Solutions Using Award-Winning OCTEON® II CN68XX Processors, and Wireless Display Solutions Using PureVu™ CNW6611L

BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwire - Feb 27, 2012) - GSMA Mobile World Congress -- Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ CAVM ]), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, and the digital home, today announced that Cavium will showcase the industry's highest performing processors optimized for LTE Mobile Infrastructure, that scale from small cell base stations to the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). Cavium will demonstrate a line-rate LTE small cell base station solution based on the [ OCTEON Fusion ] "Base Station-on-a-Chip" family and an LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solution that can scale to 1Tbps (1000Gbps) based on [ OCTEON® multi-core processors ]. In addition, Cavium will also be demonstrating its state-of-the-art wireless display solution for smartphones and tablets in Hall 2, booth 2B05 at Mobile World Congress from February 27 - March 1 in Barcelona, Spain.

Cavium processors have been chosen by major Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) and are widely adopted in 3G, LTE and WiMAX infrastructure equipment including 3G/LTE pico, micro and macro base stations/eNodeBs, Evolved Packet Core (EPC) systems, Cell Site Aggregators, Radio Network Controllers (RNC), Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN), xGSNs, Femto cells, Femto Gateways, WiMax base stations and ASN Gateways.

Providers of next-generation mobile networks are being challenged to handle the explosive increase in traffic because of the fast adoption of mobile broadband, as well as increased exchange of multimedia and video rich content. Higher traffic coupled with the need for intelligent, application-aware and secure processing has shifted the bottleneck for L3 - L7 data and security services to CPU processing that requires an unprecedented level of 64-bit CPU GHz processing power and dedicated hardware accelerations. Additionally, according to GSMA, the global mobile industry trade group, and other analysts, the number of internet connected devices will increase from 9 billion in 2011 to over 20 billion by 2020, and could potentially reach 50 billion, accelerating the migration to IPv6 and generating massive amounts of data traffic.

To enable the next generation of mobile infrastructure equipment, Cavium's OCTEON family delivers the industry's broadest and highest performance general-purpose multi-core MIPS64® processors ranging from 1 to 48 cores on a single chip. It provides advanced control processing, integrated networking interfaces, and industry-leading hardware acceleration for security, deep packet inspection (DPI), packet processing, routing, quality of service, TCP, Security, compression / decompression, baseband processing and MAC layer acceleration to solve next generations mobile infrastructure equipment's needs.

Demonstrations based on OCTEON Fusion and OCTEON processors for wireless infrastructure include:

  • LTE Small Cell Base Station Demonstration: Live demonstration showing Cavium's breakthrough OCTEON Fusion family and featuring the Industry's most powerful small cell "Base Station-on-a-Chip" which combines up to 10X OCTEON CPU and Baseband DSP Cores. This complete over-the-air LTE demonstration will include eight simultaneous connections including streaming of five HD videos, delivering the maximum possible data throughput. The demonstration platform consists of a commercially available 4G/LTE client, an OCTEON Fusion technology based eNodeB base station, Cavium's FusionStack eNodeB software, and a commercial 4G/LTE EPC (Evolved Packet Core) solution.
  • Evolved Packet Core Deep Packet Inspection Demonstration: Kontron and Cavium will illustrate how TEMs can use Deep Packet Inspection to analyze up to 1Tbps (1000Gbps) of traffic to: identify protocols and applications, monitor response times, extract relevant data, prevent inappropriate URLs, and detect intrusion attempts or malware using an integrated COTS hardware/software solution. The combination of Kontron's AdvancedTCA® DPI-hardened platform, Cavium's OCTEON II CN6880 32 core processors (which recently won the "Best Embedded Processor" Analysts' Choice Award from The Linley Group) and Cavium TurboDPI™ software will allow TEMs to quickly deploy network element designs for 4G LTE and carrier cloud-based services that require high performance processing of fixed and mobile streaming data.
  • OCTEON II CN68XX Single Chip 50Gbps Demonstration: Industry's highest performance embedded processors, with up to 48GHz of single-chip compute and 50Gbps full-duplex traffic throughput with proven scalability up to 32-chips and 1024 real-cores, the ideal solution for mobile core infrastructure applications.

Demonstration based on PureVu processor for smartphones and tablets include:

  • [ PureVu CNW6611L ] Media Soc for Wireless Display TV Adapter: Cavium's low latency end-to-end wireless display solution with hardware-accelerated transmit software for smartphones and tablets running on the Android operating system and an ultra-small form-factor USB-powered TV adapter capable of processing high definition premium content, including movies, photos, and games.

Cavium [ PACE ]Partners at Mobile World Congress: Many of Cavium's Partnership to Accelerate Customer End-solutions (PACE) partners including 6WIND, Adax, Advantech, Airspan, Bitdefender, IXIA, Kaspersky Lab, Kontron, Microsemi, MIPS Technologies, MontaVista, Qosmos, Radisys, Tata Elxsi, Vineyard Networks, Wind River that have solutions that have been optimized for the OCTEON family of processors will be in attendance at the Mobile World Congress.
