HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Nov. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MedBox (Pink Sheets: [ MDBX ]) ([ www.thedispensingsolution.com ]) released a commentary today about their automated prescription medicine dispensing systems, and the unit's ability to better regulate and manage medicines for individuals taking high volumes of medication.

According to a recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics, 40 percent of visits to the emergency room (ER) by nursing facility residents were "potentially preventable." With a heightened focus on reducing those preventable trips to the ER, one area that comes under scrutiny is that of medication management.

Over prescribing medication and drug interaction is an area that is frequently overlooked when attempting to reduce the amount of preventable trips to the ER. Often, elderly clients have several physicians and specialists who all have prescribed one or more medications to manage chronic conditions.

In nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers and medical clinics, the patient can often become overwhelmed with the sheer number of medications and dosage amounts. By installing a MedBox system, all medications are tracked and recorded in one place, allowing doctors, nurses and caregivers to quickly and easily see all the patient's medicines and dosages in one place. Additionally, the system can be programed to send an alert or to not dispense certain medicines if they are contraindicated, already prescribed, or otherwise not warranted.

MedBox is a leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of automated prescription medicine dispensing systems. The MedBox free-standing unit features 60 or more slots that can accommodate a wide variety of medicines and dosages, and is protected by both a military grade reinforced steel framework and an advanced bio-metrics fingerprint recognition system.  The systems are built by Corona, California-based AVT, Inc.
