[ Military ] customers around the world can use Riverbed WAN optimization to consolidate their IT assets, optimize bandwidth usage, and improve disaster recovery (DR) processes -- enabling cost-cutting, increased data security and greater application performance across their satellite WAN links. Military organizations need to overcome data transfer challenges associated with satellite WANs in order to deliver a reliable and fast satellite communications connection in support of military missions, regardless of the operating conditions. Riverbed solutions, including the Riverbed [ Steelhead ]® appliance, [ Riverbed Services Platform ] (RSP), [ Steelhead Mobile ] and the [ Steelhead Mobile Controller - Virtual Edition ] (SMC-VE), help achieve this.
Steelhead appliances consistently deliver industry-leading performance improvements across the broadest range of applications. The Riverbed approach accelerates all TCP-based applications across a range of environments, including high-latency satellite networks. Military customers use Steelhead appliances to accelerate applications over their satellite WAN, ensuring that users in the field have fast access to critical information.
Riverbed Steelhead appliances use a three-pronged approach that delivers benefits beyond just TCP acceleration:
-- Data streamlining, which can remove redundant data from the WAN; -- Transport streamlining, which addresses TCP chattiness and latency; and -- Application streamlining, which addresses chattiness and latency within specific applications.
Through Riverbed's partnership with Global Protocols, SkipWare is available as an application enabled to run on the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP). The RSP is a virtualized, protected partition on Steelhead appliances on which customers can run up to five third-party services and applications. With SkipWare running on a Riverbed Steelhead appliance, military customers can achieve comprehensive, cross-layer optimization without sacrificing Space Communication Protocol Standards (SCPS) standards compliance or interoperability, seamlessly linking multiple vendor technologies across different military satcom networks. Steelhead appliances with SkipWare boast optimized connectivity to the STEP and Teleport systems, optimized connectivity with any SkipWare-based military network, and full interoperability with any other SCPS-based network.
The combined solution delivers hybrid functionality, allowing customers to use either Riverbed optimization technology, SkipWare for SCPS -TP, or both as required. This enables military customers a greater degree of flexibility in how they deploy Riverbed appliances, as SCPS is the standard for many inter-agency networks. In addition, the solution delivers powerful functionality in one box, eliminating the need for multiple in-line appliances in the field. This is especially important for military satellite communications, which are subjected to a harsh array of environmental and operational conditions that can drastically impair the performance of the network.
With Riverbed Steelhead products, military customers can also accelerate applications to remote locations to give warfighters timely access to mission-critical information. For example, mobile field operations units rely on Steelhead Mobile to have fast, LAN-like access to files and applications no matter where they are, anywhere in the world. With a simple software package installed transparently on the laptop, Steelhead Mobile can overcome the difficult mobile work challenges of variable locations, inconsistent links and high-latency environments. For military customers that have a small number of mobile workers interested in implementing strategic deployments of Steelhead Mobile, Steelhead Mobile Controller - Virtual Edition (SMC-VE) is available to manage Steelhead Mobile licenses and to control the deployment, management and reporting of Steelhead Mobile software clients.
