SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - January 15, 2009) - American Technology Corporation (ATC) (NASDAQ: [ ATCO ]), a leading provider of directed sound products and technologies, announced today it has received a $375,000 LRAD® order from bird control partner, DeTect, Inc. ([ www.detect-inc.com ]).

DeTect, Inc. specializes in remote sensing technologies and systems for aviation safety, security surveillance, environmental management, weather detection and wind measurement supporting projects worldwide. DeTect is the world leader in development, deployment and support of radar systems for aircraft bird strike avoidance, avian risk assessment and migratory research.

Under the order, ATC's LRAD 1000X™ systems will be integrated into DeTect's MERLIN™ detect & deter avian radar technology to provide a bioacoustic deterrent for bird and waterfowl control and protection at a large North American industrial facility impoundment pond. DeTect's MERLIN identifies and locates birds entering control zones, activating LRAD and other deterrent devices to humanely deter birds from landing. Multiple LRAD systems will be installed at the site in a MERLIN radar-controlled network to ensure full coverage with system redundancy for protection of the birds.

"LRAD's intense, directional sound quickly deters birds and waterfowl from landing in control zones," said ATC's president and CEO, Tom Brown. "LRAD broadcasts a variety of tones, bird, and predator calls greatly reducing the habituation associated with conventional bird control devices."

LRAD is highly effective using directionality and focused acoustic output to clearly transmit tones and predator calls at distances in excess of 1000 meters. LRAD can be manually operated or integrated into remotely controlled command and control centers.

"We are introducing LRAD into new markets to assist industry in protecting and controlling wildlife," added Brown. "Agriculture, fisheries, mining concerns, wind farms, beaches, airports, air bases, harbors, and other industries and critical facilities that have wildlife safety concerns can benefit from LRAD's unique long range, directed sound capability."

Brown concluded, "We believe LRAD can protect wildlife and save industries and organizations from millions of dollars in annual losses due to wildlife-related crop and equipment damage, and avian-related accidents."
