  • The roughly 140-kilogram Yutu-2 was reported still functioning in September. A post from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) marking the sixth anniversary of the landing Jan. 3, celebrated the mission but did not provide an update ...

The Yutu-2 rover, part of China's Chang'e-4 mission, has likely become immobilized on the lunar surface after completing its historic exploration on the far side of the Moon. Launched in December 2018, Yutu-2 has exceeded its initial three-month mission lifespan, operating for over four years and traveling more than 1,000 meters. The rover's last movements were reported in January 2022, and since then, it has remained stationary, possibly due to the challenging lunar terrain or mechanical issues. Despite its immobility, Yutu-2 continues to send back scientific data, contributing valuable insights into the Moon's far side, which remains largely unexplored. The mission has been celebrated for its longevity and the significant scientific contributions it has made, even as the rover's mobility has come to an end.
