  • The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has developed a locally-made machine designed to test the strength of various materials. The high-precision material testing machine, named TechStress TS-50, was designed by researchers from the Mechanical Engineering Department of the university.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana has developed a locally made machine designed to test the strength of materials, specifically targeting the construction industry. This innovation, led by Dr. Theophilus Achiaw, aims to address the frequent building collapses in the country by providing a cost-effective and reliable method to assess the quality of construction materials like concrete and steel. The machine, which can perform tests such as compression, tension, and bending, was developed with support from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and is expected to reduce the dependency on imported testing equipment, thereby saving foreign exchange and promoting local technology. The project also involves collaboration with industry partners to ensure the machine meets international standards and can be commercialized for broader use.
