The recent editorial praising the university's move to limit or entirely remove technology from certain classroom environments suggests that the best way to move forward in education is, paradoxically, to go backward. The core premise is simple: technology, while marketed as a tool for efficiency, has become a primary source of cognitive fragmentation. By stripping away the screens, the university aims to restore the Socratic ideal of focused, dialectic inquiry.
There is something undeniably romantic about the image of a professor and a group of students huddled around a chalkboard, engaged in a battle of ideas without the intrusion of a Slack notification or the siren call of a social media feed. I remember a specific seminar from years ago where the power failed mid-lecture. For an hour, the room was plunged into a strange kind of silence, followed by a conversation that felt more visceral and urgent than anything we had discussed all semester. We weren't multitasking; we were simply present. This is the "human element" the university is betting on—the belief that intellectual rigor is born from undivided attention.

However, while the editorial frames this as a "good call," it is essential to challenge the interpretation that "no technology" is synonymous with "better learning." The assumption here is that technology is a binary switch—either it is a distraction or it is absent. This perspective overlooks the nuanced role of assistive technology. For students with dyslexia, visual impairments, or auditory processing disorders, a tablet or a laptop is not a distraction; it is a lifeline. To label a classroom "tech-free" is to risk alienating a significant portion of the student body who rely on digital tools to level the playing field. The university and it's faculty must consider whether this move is an act of pedagogical bravery or a slide toward an exclusionary ivory tower.
Furthermore, there is a dangerous disconnect between the "analog sanctuary" of the classroom and the reality of the professional world. We are training students for a landscape where digital literacy and the ability to manage information flow in real-time are non-negotiable skills. By removing technology entirely, the university may be creating an artificial environment that fails to teach students how to maintain focus within a digital context. There is a vast difference between avoiding a distraction and mastering the discipline required to ignore one. The latter is the more valuable skill in the 21st century.
There is also the question of equity. The luxury of being "unplugged" is often a privilege held by those who have already mastered the system. For students from underfunded backgrounds who may have spent their entire K–12 experience fighting for access to basic hardware, the sudden removal of those tools can feel less like a liberation and more like a deprivation of the very resources that allow them to compete.
Ultimately, the tension lies between the desire for deep, uninterrupted thought and the necessity of modern integration. While the return to the chalkboard may foster a certain type of intellectual intimacy, it should not be viewed as a universal panacea. The goal should not be the eradication of technology, but the intentional curation of it. A classroom that bans a laptop but encourages a dialogue is a start, but a classroom that teaches a student how to use a laptop as a tool for deep research rather than a portal for distraction is where the real victory lies.
