The Technological Shift: Fast Fission

Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, which typically rely on large-scale light-water reactors, Oklo is developing small modular reactors (SMRs) based on fast fission technology. Traditional reactors slow down neutrons using a moderator (like water) to maintain a chain reaction. Fast reactors, however, do not use a moderator, allowing them to utilize a broader range of nuclear fuels.

One of the most significant advantages of this technology is the potential for fuel flexibility. Oklo's design is engineered to potentially utilize recycled nuclear waste--spent fuel from traditional reactors--as a power source. Oklo deviates from the traditional nuclear industry business model. Rather than acting as a technology vendor that sells a reactor to a utility company, Oklo intends to operate as an owner-operator. In this model, Oklo builds, owns, and operates the power plants, selling the electricity directly to the end-user via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

This shift in strategy changes the financial dynamic for the customer. Data center operators do not have to shoulder the immense capital expenditure and regulatory burden of building a nuclear plant; they simply purchase the power. For Oklo, this creates a recurring revenue stream and allows them to maintain control over the operational safety and efficiency of their technology.

Regulatory and Supply Chain Hurdles

Despite the theoretical advantages, the path to commercialization is governed by strict regulatory frameworks. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) maintains rigorous safety standards that can lead to lengthy approval timelines. Any deployment of SMRs requires a validated license and a proven safety record, which remains a primary hurdle for the company.

Additionally, the supply chain for HALEU fuel is currently limited. Much of the world's HALEU production has historically been tied to Russian sources, necessitating the development of domestic fuel enrichment capabilities within the United States to ensure a stable and secure fuel supply for fast reactors.
