NASA Just Fired Its Chief Scientist, Won't Hire Another One

NASA fired and then eliminated the position of its chief scientist, Jim Green, who had served in the role for over a decade, as part of a broader restructuring effort to align the agency's science leadership with its strategic goals. Green, who had been instrumental in numerous missions including the Mars rover and the James Webb Space Telescope, was let go in a move that surprised many in the scientific community. NASA stated that the decision was made to streamline operations and better position the agency for future scientific endeavors, though some criticized the move as a loss of experienced leadership at a critical time.
