"Pure retribution," one NSF staffer said of the administration axing $46 million in unfinished research. "We as a nation are shooting ourselves in both feet."

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has decided to terminate its financial support for the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, effective from April 2023, after nearly six decades of funding. This decision comes in the wake of the observatory's collapse in December 2020, which was preceded by two cable breaks in August and November of the same year. The NSF had been the primary funder of the observatory, contributing approximately $10 million annually. The cessation of funding will impact the observatory's operations, including its educational and research programs, although the NSF plans to continue supporting the site's staff and the local community through a transition period. The Arecibo Observatory, once the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, played a significant role in various scientific discoveries and was featured in popular culture, notably in the film "Contact."
