  • Tokyo is actively working to revive Japan's semiconductor industry after decades of relying on imports. But reclaiming the nation's superpower status in this sector is still a distant dream.

Japan is making a significant push to reclaim its position in the global semiconductor industry, which is currently dominated by Taiwan. The Japanese government has committed to investing over $13 billion in Rapidus, a new venture aimed at producing cutting-edge 2-nanometer chips by 2027. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependency on foreign semiconductor supply, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities highlighted by recent global events. Japan's efforts include not only financial investment but also fostering partnerships with major tech companies like IBM, Intel, and TSMC, and enhancing its domestic capabilities through subsidies and incentives. This resurgence is also supported by the establishment of new semiconductor plants and research facilities, aiming to leverage Japan's historical strengths in precision manufacturing and technology innovation to challenge the current market leaders.
