  • The Houston-based company that was set to deliver a historic water-hunting mission to the lunar south pole says its Athena lander is dead on the moon.

The Intuitive Machines' Odysseus lunar lander mission, named Athena, concluded after just one day on the moon due to a wayward landing. The spacecraft, which aimed to be the first U.S. vehicle to land on the moon in over 50 years, encountered issues when it landed on its side, likely due to a rock or other obstruction, which compromised its ability to communicate effectively with Earth. Despite the challenges, the mission managed to transmit some data back before its solar panels could no longer capture sunlight, leading to the eventual depletion of its batteries. This mission was part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, aimed at fostering commercial deliveries to the moon. Although the mission was cut short, it provided valuable insights into the challenges of lunar landings and the resilience of the equipment under unexpected conditions.
