  • Engineers developed an engine prototype which could reach unprecedented speeds, cutting down interplanetary travel time.

Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, has announced the development of a new plasma-based engine technology that could potentially revolutionize space travel by reducing the journey time to Mars to just 30 days. This engine, which operates on nuclear power, uses plasma to generate thrust, offering a significant increase in efficiency over traditional chemical rockets. The technology, still in its early stages, aims to provide a continuous thrust, which could drastically cut down travel times within our solar system. The project, led by the Keldysh Research Center, involves creating a megawatt-class nuclear electric rocket engine, with plans to have a prototype ready by 2025. This advancement could not only make Mars missions more feasible but also enhance the exploration of other planets and asteroids, potentially opening up new avenues for space exploration and colonization.
