The European Commission on Wednesday scrapped draft rules regulating technology patents, AI and consumer privacy on messaging apps, saying it did not expect them to receive the green light from EU lawmakers and countries.

The European Union has decided to abandon several legislative proposals aimed at regulating technology patents, AI liability, and online privacy. This decision comes as part of a broader effort to streamline the EU's legislative agenda, focusing instead on more pressing issues like the AI Act, which is nearing completion. The shelved proposals included a directive on standard-essential patents, which sought to clarify how patents critical to industry standards should be licensed, and a regulation on AI liability, which would have established rules for compensating damages caused by AI systems. Additionally, a framework for online privacy was also dropped, which would have potentially impacted how tech companies handle user data. The move reflects the EU's strategy to prioritize and expedite legislation that can be more readily implemented and has greater immediate impact.
