'City-killer': Scientists issue asteroid warning

A colossal explosion in the sky, unleashing energy hundreds of times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. A blinding flash nearly as bright as the Sun. Shockwaves are powerful enough to flatten everything for miles.

Scientists have issued a warning about a "city-killer" asteroid named 2023 DW, which has a small but concerning chance of impacting Earth on February 14, 2046. This asteroid, approximately the size of an Olympic swimming pool, was discovered in late February 2023 by astronomers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. While the probability of an impact is currently estimated at 1 in 609, this figure could change as more observations are made. The European Space Agency (ESA) has highlighted the need for better tracking and understanding of such near-Earth objects (NEOs) to mitigate potential threats. The asteroid's potential impact has been added to the ESA's Risk List, emphasizing the importance of continued monitoring and the development of planetary defense strategies.
