Ahead of World Cancer Day, The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Monday launched Bharat cancer genome atlas.Bharat cancer genome atlas will "help identify cancer-specific biomarkers in India to enable early detection of breast cancers and identify novel drug targets for developing better treatment strategies specific to the Indian population.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA), a pioneering initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive database of cancer genomes specific to the Indian population. This project seeks to address the unique genetic mutations and cancer patterns prevalent among Indians, which differ from those in Western populations due to genetic diversity, environmental factors, and lifestyle differences. The BCGA will facilitate personalized medicine by providing insights into the molecular basis of cancer, potentially leading to more effective treatments tailored to individual genetic profiles. Experts have expressed optimism about the project, highlighting its potential to revolutionize cancer research and treatment in India by offering data that could lead to better diagnostic tools, targeted therapies, and improved patient outcomes. The initiative also underscores the importance of indigenous research in tackling health issues specific to the Indian demographic.
