DALLAS, Dec. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the upcoming AT&T* Developer Summit Hackathon, AT&T and General Motors today announced plans for a connected car challenge to be featured at the event. Participants competing in the GM sponsored challenge will have full access to AT&T's suite of cutting-edge APIs and developer resources as they vie for a chance to win a Chevy Volt or cash equivalent as their prize for developing the winning app.

Hosted at the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, the two-day AT&T hackathon begins Saturday, Jan. 5 and is designed for both technical and non-technical attendees to build apps in a fun, competitive atmosphere.  Participants will learn about the latest tools to build and deploy a mobile app natively or with a website backend, fully hosted in the cloud.

This year, developers competing in the hackathon will have two days (Saturday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 6) to build their apps and compete for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes. Selected finalists will also have the chance to participate in a fast-pitch competition live on stage during the AT&T Developer Summit's keynote addresses on Monday, Jan. 7.

"Joining forces with GM to enable developer innovation creates an opportunity to improve the connected experience inside automobiles, from both a safety and features standpoint," said Chris Penrose , senior vice president, AT&T Emerging Devices, AT&T Mobility. "We're arming developers with new tools and in return, we want see unique and relevant apps that help deliver our vision of the connected vehicle."

"We're particularly interested in apps and services that enhance the overall driving experience, vehicle ownership and uniquely leverage information about the vehicle."
