Leading European Set-Top Box Manufacturer Televes Chooses Sigma Designs' SoC and "httvBOX" Middleware for New Free-to-Air Hybrid Set-Top Box
New STB Offering Is First HbbTV Deployment for Sigma Designs-Based httvBOX Middleware
MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 4, 2012) - Sigma Designs (
A major new pan-European initiative, HbbTV is aimed at uniting the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment to the end user through connected TVs and STBs. Powered by Sigma Designs' SMP 8670 chipset, consumers purchasing HbbTV devices will have access to new services from entertainment providers such as catch-up TV, video on demand (VoD), interactive advertising, personalization, voting, games and social networking, among many other features.
Spain-based Televes is the first set-top-box manufacturer to use the combination of Sigma's SoC and the HbbTV turn-key solution. The initial deployment is targeted to the growing hybrid market in Europe. With Httv's expansion plans for Russia and Asia, all three companies are well positioned to take full advantage of new market opportunities.
"Televes is excited to partner with Sigma Designs and httv in our Zas Hbb set-top box," said Sergio Martin, Communications Director at Televes Corporation.
"We are thrilled to announce the first deployment of an STB incorporating the Sigma-based 'httvBOX' solution, which offers best in class performance for interactive broadcast standards such as HbbTV," said Waheed Rasheed, VP of Marketing at Sigma Designs. "Our open framework SDK solution for SMP8670 that supports QT-Webkit enabled the fast port of httvBOX middleware, and the partnership between Sigma Designs and httv has resulted in a highly interactive and cost-effective hybrid solution to the fast growing European FTA market."
"We are excited that our collaboration with Sigma Designs is starting to bear fruit with the release of Televes' newest STB -- the first device based on our httvBOX middleware," said Bernard Dupin, CEO of httv group. "HbbTV is a fast-growing standard, and we look forward to uncovering new opportunities for this technology in the European market with Televes and Sigma Designs."
A demonstration of the Sigma Designs/httv solution can be seen at IBC booth #BM7 and BM8 at the RAI, Amsterdam. For more information, visit [ www.sigmadesigns.com ].
