VPG Introduces Industry's First Digital CAN On-Board Weighing System With Tilt Compensation

SI Onboard 9150 Combines High Accuracy With Simple Configuration, Detailed Diagnostics, and Graphic Color TFT Display

MALVERN, PA--(Marketwire - Jun 14, 2012) - Vishay Precision Group, Inc. (NYSE: [ VPG ]) today announced that SI Onboard, a brand of the VPG On-Board Weighing product line, has introduced the first digital on-board weighing system in North America. The industry's only weighing system based on the CAN standard and to feature tilt compensation, the SI Onboard 9150 provides extremely high accuracy regardless of truck position; simple calibration through setup wizards; detailed, real-time diagnostics; and a graphic color TFT display.

The 9150 system is optimized for underbody on-board weighing in a broad range of truck makes and models -- including forestry/logging, waste management and recycling, freight, and bulk hauling trucks -- to optimize the payload; to prevent costly overloading fees at truck scales; and to reduce vehicle maintenance by preventing overloading. By utilizing digital communication instead of an analog signal in these applications, the system provides a higher immunity to electromagnetic noise and better performance under high temperatures and humidity conditions.

The 9150 on-board weighing system provides gross or net vehicle weight with high accuracy, as well as axle group loading and overload alarms for the truck and trailers. While other weighing systems are prone to errors when loading occurs on uneven ground or on a slope, the 9150's tilt compensation measures the tilt angle of the truck and trailer in both pitch and roll axes. The measured angles are used to compensate the readings from the load cells to ensure accurate weighing regardless of the truck position.

The digital CAN system is composed of two components: the 9150 meter to provide the user interface and the 9150 JBOX/transmitter to integrate the interface with the load cells, signal processing, diagnostics, and the local functionality needed for setup and calibration per trailer. The 9150 meter features a bright 4.3 in. graphic color TFT display with LED backlighting to display weight, configuration, and diagnostic results. Offering a wide viewing angle under all lighting conditions, the interface provides four arrow keys and four soft keys for easy operation and navigation among the meter's menus and modes. The meter's RS-232 interface allows for connection to a printer or in-cab PC, while a USB interface enables backup and restore of setup parameters and user data.

For intuitive setup using the 9150's password-protected wizards, the operator simply selects the relevant configuration from the drop-down menu, and the system automatically configures the needed parameters. Up to eight 9150 transmitters can be added to the system to support an additional four to eight trailers. For easy connection of the trailers, including hot swaps, all operational and setup parameters are stored in the 9150 transmitter. Once the trailer is connected to the truck, the 9150 meter reads the required parameters from the transmitter and updates the system accordingly.

The 9150 runs real-time diagnostics of load cells, transmitters, and meters. While other systems can only detect a problem in a group of load cells, the 9150 can test the parameters of each load cell individually. Faults and alarms are displayed on the screen -- in addition to an audible alarm -- showing fault location and details for easy maintenance. Operators can switch off faulty load cells and continue operation without them.
