MITCHELL, S.D., May 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless will expand its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Mitchell, S.D., starting Thursday, May 17, enabling customers in more areas of South Dakota to take advantage of the nation's largest 4G LTE network.

The company also will expand its 4G LTE footprint in 10 other markets currently with Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service and introduce the network in 28 new markets the same day. With the new and expanded markets, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will be available in a total of 258 markets, covering more than two-thirds of the U.S. population.

The expanded 4G coverage area will now be available in Mitchell and West along Interstate 90 to Kimball. Additional cities included in the launch are Draper, Mount Vernon, Murdo, Plankington, Vivian and White Lake.

With the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, customers can enjoy the best experience in wireless data usage when they stream video, share music and photos, download files and surf the Web with speeds up to 10 times faster than before. Verizon Wireless initially launched its 4G LTE network in South Dakota in Sioux Falls on June 1, 2011, followed by Rapid City, S.D., on Nov. 16, 2011. This year the network expanded around the Rapid City area and Pierre launched on April 17.

4G LTE Coverage and Speed

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, 4G LTE devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.
