MADRID, April 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- [ SAP AG ] (NYSE: [ SAP ]) today announced that British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority (BC Hydro), along with Itron, Inc., has launched one of the largest implementations of smart meters with back-end integration to date with [ SAP® Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Integration for Utilities ] software. The system collects data from smart meters and connects the technical infrastructure with the business software back end. In 2012, BC Hydro plans to install 1.8 million smart meters, serving 94 percent of British Columbia's population. The announcement was made at the [ SAP Conference for Utilities 2012 ], being held April 17-19 in Madrid.

Using smart meters helps BC Hydro to determine exact customer needs faster and more accurately. Together with a meter data unification system (MDUS) and SAP AMI Integration for Utilities, BC Hydro can analyze consumption to more accurately predict demand and align supply. Predicting demand in advance helps increase energy efficiencies by balancing demand, delivery and supply. At the same time, smart meters give consumers the ability to increase visibility into their consumption habits and drive conservation behavior.

Information on customers' energy usage is collected from the smart meters and then stored in an MDUS provided by Itron. SAP AMI Integration for Utilities facilitates the continuous exchange of master and transactional data between MDUS and [ SAP® for Utilities ] solutions. In the SAP back-end systems, the data from the smart meters serves as the basis for business processes such as invoicing, customer service and analysis.

"SAP AMI Integration for Utilities made it possible to implement our smart meter program," said Gary Murphy, chief project officer, Smart Metering Program, BC Hydro. "With the program, we can continue to provide a clean, reliable supply of energy to our customers — today and in the future."
