KEMET Presents Congo Social Sustainability Efforts at United Nations

[ ]

GREENVILLE, S.C., March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- KEMET Corporation (NYSE: [ KEM ]), a leading manufacturer of tantalum, ceramic, aluminum, film, paper and electrolytic capacitors, today announced that it presented at the 36th annual UNIS-UN Conference on Human Exploitation. This conference investigated and reviewed the various aspects and methods of human exploitation on a global scale.

KEMET's presentation, Conflict-Free and Socially Sustainable, focused on KEMET's current social sustainability activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where conflict minerals (tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold) act as a source of funding for the armed militias committing atrocities in the DRC and surrounding countries. These militia groups exploit the efforts of local artisanal miners and their families to fund their local wars.

KEMET has recently begun sourcing conflict-free tantalum ore from the conflict-free Katanga Province in the DRC for use in the manufacture of electronic capacitors.

The presentation by Dr. Daniel F. Persico, KEMET's Vice President of Strategic Marketing & Business Development, reviewed the combined efforts of KEMET and its supplier, MRI, to develop a safe and sustainable environment whereby the quality of life is enhanced for the miners, their families and the community as a whole.

The presentation highlighted the new hospital and school which are in the process of being built and are scheduled for completion within the next two months, as well as infrastructure enhancements such as solar street lighting, arable land and water wells.

"It is KEMET's intent to show that economics and social sustainability can be true partners in developing an infrastructure that will benefit the whole community, both in the short and long term," said Persico. "Too many times corporations do not get credit for their charitable and corporate social responsibility efforts. This is but one example showing how social sustainability efforts can benefit communities and corporations both. We hope this comprehensive business model will be replicated by more companies in the DRC," continued Persico.
